Triste nouvelle pour ceux qui appréciaient cette gamme lancée en 1998 et les possibilités qu’elle offrait, notamment d’un point de vue pédagogique : LEGO annonce aujourd’hui l’abandon de la gamme interactive LEGO MINDSTORMS dès fin 2022 et l’arrêt de la commercialisation des produits correspondants.

Concrètement, cela veut dire que le set LEGO 51515 MINDSTORMS Robot Inventor lancé en 2020 et les produits 88016 Large Hub et 88018 Medium Angular Motor vont sortir du catalogue d’ici fin 2022, et ne seront plus donc disponibles à la vente dès l’an prochain. L’équipe côté LEGO sera réaffectée sur d’autres priorités.

Pas d’impact du côté des produits LEGO Education / SPIKE Prime qui continuent à exister, avec par exemple les sets 45678 LEGO Education SPIKE Prime Set et 45681 LEGO Education SPIKE Prime Expansion Set, même si la cible est un peu différente.

Les plateformes digitales (comme par exemple l’application LEGO MINDSTORMS Robot Inventor) resteront disponibles et supportées (y compris en ce qui concerne les mises à jour des différents systèmes d’exploitation) au moins jusqu’à fin 2024. Aucune promesse au-delà de cette date, mais on peut espérer qu’il sera toujours possible d’utiliser ces produits via l’application SPIKE Prime.

Since its launch in September 1998, LEGO MINDSTORMS has been one of the core ‘Build & Code’ experiences in the company’s portfolio, carrying with it significant brand equity and becoming a stand-out experience for the early days of consumer robotics and leading to current Build & Code experiences such as SPIKE Prime, from LEGO Education’s LEGO Learning System.

However, now having a number of priorities in LEGO Education and other Build & Code experiences, we have decided to focus our resources and future plans by redirecting our MINDSTORMS Robot Inventor team and their expertise into different areas of the business.

This means the physical MINDSTORMS Robot Inventor product (51515) and its related elements (88016 and 88018) are to exit our portfolio from the end of 2022, whilst digital platforms – such as the LEGO MINDSTORMS Robot Inventor App – will remain live until at least the end of 2024.

We still have strong belief in the Build & Code proposition and will continue to support it through platforms such as SPIKE Prime, and we are continuing to hold on to the trademark for the MINDSTORMS brand and assessing our future plans together with LEGO Education.

We’ll keep supporting the app for at least another two years for our fans who enjoy using it, and it’ll continue to be a safe platform for kids to use. We’ll continue to support new OS updates on all the currently supported platforms (iOS, MacOS, Windows, Android and FireOS).
